IRIS is a new way to e-file the 1099 series forms.
It's similar to FIRE in that:
You need a TCC to file.
You generate an upload file to upload to the IRS.
What's different is:
The upload is a few clicks. You don't need to navigate a website, etc.
Status updates are a few clicks as well.
The downside is establishing an account (and getting a TCC) for the first time is a little more complicated.
Getting an IRIS Transmitter Control Code (and a "full user ID")
Go to the IRS IRIS website here: https://www.irs.gov/filing/e-file-information-returns-with-iris
There are 2 things you need to obtain from the IRS. An IRIS TCC (not the same as Fire) and a Full User ID.
The TCC is 5 characters and looks like: ABCLF (example)
The FUID is 20 characters and looks like: ABTAXTG74H-74430159 (wxample)
Getting a TCC for A2A
You CAN have multiple TCCs and for different purposes. So if you used IRIS last year for "portal" reporting, you need to get a different one for A2A reporting.
You want to choose a role of Transmitter during the application. This means you can file for yourself and others.
The role of Issuer is for a single business only and the payer data and issuer data must all match.
Even if you are only submitting data for yourself/your own business, we recommend the Transmitter role.
Go to the IRS website for IRIS TCC applications using this link:
https://www.irs.gov/tax-professionals/iris-application-for-tcc
A page similar to this will display. The application is completed using the button indicated by the yellow arrow.
We suggest you review the tutorial (link below the button) before starting.
The TCC will be an alpha numeric ID (5 characters) and will be specifically for "A2A" use as shown below.
